The elderly should be given a
regular supply of hot drinks and
at least one hot meal a day to keep
them safe during the bitter winter
months, says the National
Association of Care Catering.
In order to help pensioners be as prepared as
possible for the winter months the nacc has
been working with local authorities to develop
new guidelines which will be sent out to the
uk’s 12million pensioners.
Recommendations include:
- Aim to provide at least one hot meal a day
and give hot drinks regularly
throughout the day
- Provide a hot drink before bedtime
- Prepare a thermos flask of a hot drink to
have by residents’/patients’ beds
Derek Johnson, nacc chairman, says: “Winter is a
time when everyone’s health can suffer. However,
illness like flu and pneumonia can lead to serious
complications for older people so it is really
important to ensure their health is in good check
and they are eating well.
“Good nutrition is even more vital during the
winter months and we hope these guidelines
will provide carers
with the information
they need to help
the elderly to
stay in good
health this
winter.”
