We wondered what our TV chefs would
be cooking up for their own mums and
wives on this special day of the year?
In Britain, Mothering Sunday - or the increasingly used US term ‘Mother’s Day’ - falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
But most other countries around the
globe adopt the US date which is
always the second Sunday in May.
Stir it up’s Sarah Rigg chatted to four
culinary kings to find out what they
will be doing on March 22 . . .
Hairy Biker Simon
King’s Turbot
for mum Stella
If ‘Si’ King isn’t the most genuinely lovely
TV cook you will ever meet - that is only
because he shares the title with foodie
friend and fellow Hairy - David Myers.
The super-duo are set to burst back
onto our screens this summer with a
monster 30 episode show unearthing
the culinary treasures that provide the
regional riches of our land.
So it is hardly a wonder that Si’s mum,
Stella, is beaming with pride in this
family snap of the devoted pair.
Simon, from Northumberland, tells
Stir it up: “Mother’s day is a great
opportunity for me to spoil my
mam rotten.
“You’ve got to tell them you love
them and make all the noises sons
should - too much and you’re
insincere - not enough and you
don’t care. It is a fine balance!
“I will be picking my mam up,
allowing her to drink her own weight
in sherry, buy her flowers and treat
her to some quality time - and food
- with her male offspring.
“I will be making my mam Turbot,
which I have cooked her on
numerous occasions - she loves it!”
Antony Worrall
Thompson’s
sweetcorn pancakes
with poached
free range eggs
and hollandaise
sauce for wife Jay
Restaurateur and telly chef Antony
Worrall Thompson lost his mum,
Joanna, tragically just four days
before his 13 year old son Toby
was born.
So Antony’s mission on Mothering
Sunday is to make it as special as
possible for his beloved wife Jay
- with the help of their two children.
He tells Stir it up: “The kids and I
make American style sweetcorn
pancakes with poached eggs and
hollandaise (eggs from our own
chickens which the children collect),
along with some bucks fizz and the
breakfast tray scattered with rose
petals. For lunch we would take
Jay to somewhere local such as
the Waterside Inn in Bray with
wonderful views of the river. Diego
is such a fabulous Maitre’d and
the Roux’s are such wonderful
hosts and we always get well
pampered and the food is fabulous
without having to resort to
scientific methods!”
Chris and
James Tanner’s
6 hour slow braised
lamb shoulder and
champ potato
for mum Beverley
The Tanners will be shutting their
restaurants, Tanners and the Barbican
Kitchen on Mothering Sunday - so
they can spoil their own mum with
her favourite lamb dish. Now there’s
dedication for you!
But if it wasn’t for mum Beverley
spending hours on end cooking with
the boys when they were children,
the talented two-some may never
have made it in the competitive
world of cooking.
Chris says: “Dad was out at work
from 6am until 7pm. So we did a lot
of cooking with mum. She taught
us all sorts, pastries, cakes, how to
make a little food go a long way.
“For example mum cooked a roast
chicken on a Sunday and then she
would make a curry out of the
left-overs, padded out with apple,
raisins and veg.”
James adds: “Our mum deserves
a little pampering and she loves
this - your readers should try it out
for themselves.”
