Sesame seeds can be added to
breads, including bagels and the
tops of hamburger buns, baked into
crackers, and sprinkled onto some
sushi style foods.
Astonishingly, about
one-third of Mexico's sesame crop
is exported to the United States and
purchased by McDonald's for their
sesame seed buns.
Ground and processed, the seeds
can also be used in sweet confections.
Sesame seeds can be made into a
paste called tahini (used in various
ways, including in hummus) and a
Middle Eastern confection called halvah.
Here are five other ways to use
sesame seeds:
- Chinese dishes are enhanced by the
addition of sesame seeds. Add to
stir fries for an extra nutty flavour
- Coat fresh tuna in sesame seeds and
sear, and serve with pak choi and
soya sauce for a Japanese treat
- Add toasted sesame seeds to a
dressing of butter, honey and lemon
and serve with steamed asparagus
for a delicious starter
- Sesame seeds are a key ingredient
of granola - a healthy snack filled
with fibre, fruit and nuts
- Sprinkle onto salads for added flavour
