Whitby Seafoods is taking a proactive
approach to ensuring the sustainability
of its scampi by entering its fishery into
the full assessment process against
the Marine Stewardship Council
(MSC) standard.
If the company passes the 12-month
assessment it will be able to display
the MSC eco-label on its scampi
products - which confirms that the
scampi has come from a sustainable
and well-managed fishery.
Edward Whittle, supply chain director
ofWhitby Seafoods, said: “We
recognise our customers want
to see MSC eco-labelled scampi
and langoustine to help them
make better choices.
“Furthermore, by working together
with the MSC, we are confident we can
ensure that the seafood products we
supply will be sustainable in the future.”
Research shows that more and more
consumers are concerned about
dwindling fish stocks and sustainability
is the third highest
reason why consumers
are willing to pay
a higher price
for food.
