The pre-packaged
sandwich market is worth
a staggering £6billion a
year, new research reveals.
It is the nation’s number one lunchtime
snack with every UK supermarket
selling its own brand. Here are a few
facts you probably never knew...
- A bacon sandwich really does cure
a hangover - by boosting the level
of amines which clear the head,
scientists have found.
- It was named after its inventor
- John Montague, 4th Earl of
Sandwich - who, according to his
biographer, created the bread, meat,
bread combination so he could eat
at his desk while working.
- The UK’s favourite sandwich is
chicken salad followed by prawn
mayonnaise (last year’s number 7),
bacon, lettuce and tomato at number
three and a ‘selection pack’ at
number four for the indecisive
buyers, according to the British
Sandwich Association.
- The record for creating the most
expensive sandwich ever made is
claimed by chef Tom Bridge who’s
Lancaster Cheese Sandwich was
sold on Ebay in 2006 for £345.
The creation included white Umbrian
truffles at £1700 per kilo. The full
recipe can be found on the British
Sandwich Association website at
www.sandwichesonline.org.uk.
- British consumers managed to eat
their way through over 11.5billion
sandwiches last year - and more
than half of these were made and
eaten in the home.
- 19 per cent of all sandwiches are
purchased in London with the
Midlands just behind at 17 per cent,
then Yorkshire (12 per cent) and
Lancashire (11 per cent). Those living
in the North East and the South
West buy the fewest pre-packed
sandwiches in the country.
